8/8/2011: Zach Brock & The Magic Number at 8pm and 10pm. Jarrett Cherner & Alec Spiegelman at 9pm

For this installment of The Monday Night Ramble, we offer you a very special evening of music!

At 8pm and 10pm, Zach Brock and The Magic Number take the stage with an amazing set of all Zach’s original tunes for a very unusual jazz trio.

Zach Brock on Violin
Matt Wigton on Bass
Fred Kennedy on Drums

The Magic Number, is an acoustic trio with Zach on violin, Matt Wigton on bass, and Fred Kennedy on drums, as well as wordless vocals and pitched percussion. The group’s unusual instrumentation allows for a wide variety of sounds, from sparse to dense, and the group’s repertoire is a mix of Zach’s original compositions with original arrangements of modern and classic jazz and pop standards. The absence of either piano or guitar demands extra harmonic duties from each member of the trio, including chordal techniques from the strings and a more contrapuntal approach to the musical arrangements overall.

Then at 9pm, Pianist Jarrett Cherner and singer/multi-instrumentalist Alec Spiegelman will take the stage to perform their duo set.

They met 8 years ago in Boston. Besides much jamming of Bud Powell and Monk, they share a history playing blues and r&b in dive bars, roadhouses, ski lodges, and beach towns throughout New England. Expect the duo to play original compositions, standards, non-standards, and at least one Otis Redding tune.

As always, RSVP to the Facebook event, and get a free shot! (bartender’s choice, bring ID)
